Music, Culture, & Change

I believe that music is central to human nature. It is expressed through culture but the seed of it is utterly human.

Music can be a rollercoaster for our emotions. It can help us get through the worst times and enjoy the good times that much more. The arts, in general, seem to be very close to our primitive brain. They are mediums of communicating without necessarily using written or spoken language.

My speculative mind tells me that deep house music is closer to the ancestral roots of where music came from than most other genres… my thinking is that: primitive humans likely made music by banging stones on other surfaces to create beats and then added their voice later on.

Yet, it is important for everyone to be able to develop their own taste in music. Companies like Soundcloud, Spotify, and Apple have helped us tremendously in this and I do not know where we would be without them. Do note though that I regularly clear my Youtube browsing history and recently started a new Spotify account to restore the algorithm… even if only for a short period.

I would love to see more ‘appropriation’ of music from tribal and ancient cultures into modern music. Appropriation definitely has a negative connotation and I used that word because of a lack of a better one.

When we hear deep house music overlayed with tribal African or Middle Eastern beats we could throw our hands up and get angry that the music is stealing from other cultures. Or we could say that music is getting another life and is adapting. It is an evolution that we can hear.

It really is up to us and our mindset.

We will continue to have music and culture will continue to evolve. I would be ecstatic to see that we can continue this change without losing everything from the past.
